Work as a teacher in Ontario

by Gean Oliveira on February 4, 2008

If you are an immigrant and also a teacher, you can teach in Ontario. However, teaching is a regulated profession in Ontario and you should receive your license in order to teach. You should register at the Ontario College of Teachers to receive your license. Please, remember that being a teacher means that your communications skills should be higher, as you have to deal with a lot of situations including teaching (of course), and also with their parents, boards, etc.

To achieve this you have to provide a proof of proficiency in English or French. Remember that every province have its own requirements. Below you can find some websites that you can use to search for a job as a teacher in Canada:

My dream is to teach in Canada. I'm a young man from Nigeria. Thank you.
  • Pedro: Yeah, it is possible. However, you need to immigrate to Canada or also find a company here who is willing to hire you (the second option is more difficult, but not impossible).

Jack: I hope your dreams become true. All the best and I'd suggest you check the www.cic.gc.ca website for more information.

Hello sir. My name is Vikramjeet Verma. I have done masters in English from Punjab University Chandigarh, India and have been teaching in some school English as well as social science but specialisation stays with English as I have worked very hard in fact still doing to master the high level of English language. Besides it, I m preparing for NET, a test, conducted at national level in India that certifies a person to be legible for teaching the concerned subject in colleges. But from last two or three days, I m thinking of doing same, teaching English in Canadian Colleges. but for that as it seems, i have to live up to the terms required there. and for all those I request you to guide or show me any way to have job in education sector, the way i told you i.e teaching english
  • Vikram, as I said before, each province has its own rules and the requirements may varies from one province to another. If you'd like to find a job in the education sector in Ontario, for example, you have to visit the Ontario College of Teachers and find out their requirements.

I am from South Africa. I am still reading for my undergrad degree at Rhodes University, and I am in my final year, I will be doing my post grad diploma in education for grade4,5 and 6 next year. I was just wondering about the options that I will have in terms of teaching in Canada? the credits I will have at the end of my degree are: English 1 , German 1, Politics 1, art history 2, industrial sociology 3 and clinical psychology 3, and then as said, my diploma in education. how do i go about getting into Canada to teach? where do I even start?

    thanks so so much!!
