Thanksgiving in Canada

by Gean Oliveira on October 8, 2007

Today is Thanksgiving in Canada. The holiday is celebrated on the second Monday of October. In the United States the date is celebrated in November. Apart the difference between the dates, the reason is also different: in Canada we thank a successful harvest while the Americans remember pilgrims and settling in the new world.

In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated with your family, normally eating turkey. We usually get together with friends to talk, drink and also see the leaves in autumn. Here in Toronto we had a different day, as the temperature was incredibly 32 celsius. Awesome!

I was invited to go to my friend’s house and we had a Brazilian dish: feijoada! Oh boy, that was terrific. I ate around 2:30pm and right now it is 9:40pm and I’m still full :)

Happy Thanksgiving!

    Hello Canadian Immigrant,

    A good food!! Hummm...

American immigrants also brought Thanksgiving traditions to Canada. It's used to be celebrated in November, but the growing season in Canada is shorter and the harvest falls earlier. Then, in 1931, Canadians started celebrating Thanksgiving in October, and since 1957 it's celebrated on the second Monday in October.
