Social Insurance Number

After you arrive in Canada as an immigrant, the Social Insurance Number or simply SIN is one of the most important documents you should apply. If you need to work in Canada, obtain tax credits or open a bank account you will be asked for your Social Insurance Number.

To apply for a SIN you can download the form or just go to a Service Canada Centre. There are some documents that you need to show in order to apply. As an immigrant, you can use of of the following documents:

  • Permanent Resident Card;
  • Confirmation of permanent resident and a visa counterfoil;
  • Record of landing.

It is also important to note that you should never put your SIN number on your Resume neither give your SIN number for businesses who ask for yours. If you do this, some people can use your SIN number as theirs and then, gets a job using your SIN number. At the end of the year, you’re the one who will pay taxes on that person’s salary.

Once the application for your SIN number is accepted, you usually receive your SIN number by mail in aprox. 3 weeks.
