Save energy at home with programmable thermostats

by Gean Oliveira on October 22, 2008

One of the lessons that I’ve learned in Toronto is how to take care of my house. Winter is coming and we have to prepare our houses to the cold temperatures. Every single house in Canada has a heating system. Without a heating system at home you’ll be in trouble.

If you want to save energy at home you should use a programmable thermostat. The programmable thermostat gives you control of home. What I usually do is, during the week while we’re at home the temperature is 21 degrees C. If there’s nobody at home, I set the thermostat to 17 degrees C. Doing that you’re saving energy.

If you live in Ontario you can benefit from a program called Every Kilowatt Counts Power Savings. Depending the appliances that you have at home you can get discounts when replacing or buying a new one. I’ve heard about this program last year when I replaced my manual thermostat with the programmable one. The discount for this year is $15dollars.

Remember, you are not saving energy only when you buy the programmable thermostat. You also save energy during winter because you’re lowering the temperature when you are not at home. A study from Statistics Canada shows that:

In 2006, 4 out of every 10 Canadian households with a thermostat had one that could be programmed. The majority of these devices (83%) were programmed.

If you live in Ontario and would like to benefit from this program, check the coupons available at the Every Kilowatt Counts Power Saving Event.
