Resources for new immigrants in Canada

by Gean Oliveira on March 5, 2008

Sooner or later, one of the places that a newcomer in Canada will go is to YMCA. At least here in Toronto, the YMCA Newcomer Information Centre is a must go. The YMCA NIC is funded by the Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the goal is to provide newcomer access to a number of services they need.

Access to the Internet, books, newspapers, magazines, fax, printers are some of the services provided. Also, if you’re planning to study or improve your English skills in Canada, chances are you will need to have your assessment done there, specially for the LINC Program.

Their staff speaks over 20 different languages and if you’re not comfortable with your English/French, you should go there and speak with someone in your own language. Don’t loose the opportunity of going there to knew about their services.

The map above is the YMCA NIC that I went. It is located at 42 Charles St, in Toronto. I still have my YMCA card. When we came to Canada, I went there with my wife as we’re looking for a LINC class for her. In addition, I needed to use a fax machine and a printer (which we didn’t have at that time). You’ll be amazed in how friendly they are and always ready to help. Why? They know how difficult it is for an immigrant in Canada in the beginning as some of them had the same problems when they came.

Hello!, mi English is not realy good, but I interesting learn to much, and I whant to move to Canada, Im a Medic ( General practice). MI question is that if can I move whith mi goodfriend and mi doog too?
  • Eduardo, without English skills, unfortunately it is almost impossible for you to work in Canada as a doctor. One of the requirements that you need to pass is an Exam in English skills. If your skills are still not good, I'd advise you to improve your English skills and then, when you become comfortable, you can apply. Regarding your girlfriend and your dog the answer is yes.

Hi, actually i am seventeen this year and i wish to live and work in canada. I am a malaysian is that hard for malaysian? And is there any program or agencies for teenagers from other states and plan for us live and work at there? Like host family or Aupair or something like that?
  • Ali: You can check this visiting the website http://www.cic.gc.ca and looking for the Skilled worker program. You can take the test online to see if you met the criteria used to immigrate to Canada.

Sebastian: As I've said above, take the online test to see how many points you can get.

Nitin: Take a look at my other posts and see what is necessary.

Gary: It is hard for everybody once we leave our country. As you're still 17, it is not possible for you to immigrate to Canada. However, if this is your dream, why don't you come to Canada to study English? Doing this, you can learn more about the country and ater on decide if this is really what you want.
