Project with immigrants in Toronto

by Gean Oliveira on November 25, 2008

Did you know that I used to be a teacher back in Brazil? Yes, that’s correct. I was also the coordinator, responsible for the school curriculum, taught grade 8 students, first point of contact between parents and teachers and so on. Actually, I just left the school because I received my visa and immigrated to Canada.

A lot of immigrants living in Canada are switching careers in order to get their first job. If you don’t have Canadian Experience, sometimes this is your path (and the only one) to find a job in Canada. The main reason for me was basically my communication skills at the beginning. Yes, I did not feel confident to go to the class, stay in front of 20 – 30 people, and talk about something I loved – web design and development. I know that I will do this in the future and I know how to: volunteering!

Anyway, a friend of mine – Elaine – send me and e-mail and talked to me about her project. Look at her e-mail:

I am a student photographer and I am looking for some people to participate in a project. I need several people (female or male) who came to Canada as immigrants as “skilled worker”. Those people need NOT to be working in their professional field. I want to portray how many skilled workers come to this country looking for a better life and somewhat mislead by the fact that Canada needs skilled workers to fulfill Canadian demand in professional areas. As an immigrant myself, I know that’s very far from the truth.
It doesn’t matter where you are from, as a matter of fact I’d like to cover as many countries as possible in this project. The only other request besides the way you migrated to Canada is that you need to live in the Toronto area (as far as Oakville – but if you live farther away and are interested, please contact me anyway).
If you fit in the category and are interested in participating, please email me at elainebitt@gmail.com as soon as possible.

Thank you very much,
Elaine Cavalheiro

I will participate. What about you?
