Statistics Canada released today the police personnel and expenditures in 2008. I went to the website to see the results and here’s a snapshot:
Canada had just over 65,000 police officers as of May 15, 2008. Following a period of general decline throughout the 1990s, police strength has generally increased over the past decade. At 196 officers per 100,000 population, the 2008 rate was 1% higher than in 2007 and 8% higher than a decade earlier.
The population is increasing and at the same time is the police force. The number of female officers is increasing in a faster pace than the males. While the number of female officers in 2008 was up 3%, the number of male officers increased 2% (from the previous year).
On the same report, I found a table which shows the number of officers (male and female) in some cities. I also did another investigation, looking for their salaries (1st Class Constable) in some cities across Canada. Below you can find and compare the results:
- Toronto (9,585 officers): $71,523
- Montreal (6,997 officers): $66,577
- Vancouver (3,410 officers): $74,619
- Calgary (1,711 officers): $75,393
- Winnipeg (1,364 officers): $73,081
- Saskatoon (449 officers): $72,200
