One more immigrant living in Canada

by Gean Oliveira on October 1, 2007

As the post title, my intention will be to provide you information related to How to Live in Canada. I’ve been living here since 2003 and a lot of things have changed. However, I think that I can help you go through your dream of living in Canada as an immigrant.

My dream started back in 2000 when I finished my undergraduate degree and when I was looking for universities to my Master’s degree abroad. That’s how everything starts.

If you have the same dream, or if you’re also living here let’s talk about.

Hello! I want to ask is it really easier or faster to apply as an immigrant if I am living in Hongkong? Thanks!

  • Beach_lover_83

Hi Gean.. i would like to ask how many years do i have to wait for my visa to be released?! last February 2010 i received a letter from the Canadian embassy here in manila that my visa for permanent residence to Canada is ready to be issued and needs to comply some documents like (passport, appendix A attached in their letter,NBI clearance and photos).i already send it to them. but till now my visa hasn't been released and what worries me is that my medical will expire this coming December 15, 2010.

*note: my husband who is my principal applicant already received the confirmation as permanent residence under the live-on caregiver program.

I require some assistance on a pressing matter and I hope that you can shed some light on it. The issue surrounds the fact that I have a friend who is a permanent resident of Canada and suffers from a disability from which he receives ODSP benefits. A couple of years ago, he sponsored his daughter to come to Canada and was successful in this application as he was exampt under s. 133(1)(k) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations ("IRPR"). Of course, due to the change in the family unit, his daughter being a dependent, the ODSP benefits that he received were recalculated to meet the basic needs and thus due to the increase of the ODSP benefits for support of his daughter, the father's undertaking went into default since it is regarded that his daughter is now receiving social assistance within the time limit that the father was supposed to be supporting her and not to receive any form of social assistance. The father recently remarried a woman from his original country, had a child and the woman has 3 other dependent children from a previous relationship . He wishes to sponsor them to come to Canada but due to the default on the undertaking, based on his daughter receiving social assistance through the increase of the ODSP benefits, he has been refused.
Have you ever heard of such a case? And if so, what are the steps that can be taken to remedy the situation? I feel that this is an issue of unconsionability.

Do you have any ideas of what to do? Thanks!
(I have spent hours researching this to no avail)

    Sir,
I have been duped on the process of trying to make the payment through a telegraphic transpher, after opening a DOM account and deposited the sum of $510 USD in the account with a bank here in nigeria,to transfer the sum of $409 USD to the MIGRATION EXPERT.i was ask by the bank to come on monday morning seems its weekend that they can not make the transfer at that time. But to my greatest surprise, when i got to the bank on monday morning i found series of securities in the bank entrance gate.i was so confused, until i saw a local news paper that indicate that the bank is owning the CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA.that they are out of service till further notice.

Please,i am asking if i can get an employer that will give me a job offer and sponsor me.i shall be glad to pay him back in cash or service.any option he gives,i will accept it with pleasure.

PLEASE I DONT WANT TO LOSE THE OPPORTUNITY YOU HAVE GIVEN TO ME.KINDLY ASSIST ME.

    Hi,
If my husband gets work in Canada, ( he is a skilled worker), how easy is it for me and my two children to move there with him? Do we just go on his work permit too or do we need to apply for residency or what? There's a good chance of him getting a job offer sometime soon, so I just wanted to be sure before he made any decisions,
    Thankyou

Thush, you can't obtain a work permit to come to Canada/just come to Canada, until your LMO has been approved - that is to say you are now able to apply for the work permit because you are allowed the job! Thats the way job offers work. You are offered it, then Immigration must give you the right to that job (LMO). It stands for Labour Market Opinion.

Likewise you cannot obtain a work permit without a job offer.

PD: Of course, another thing Im trying to find out, its that if its true that they dont give work visas to private school students, I dont want to risk to apply, be rejected and then change to a public school, simply too suspicious and obvious

  • Aida

    Hello Gean,
Im an International student, 22 years old, Ive been studying in Toronto for 1 year, and I want to stay, I love this country. I have been researching about my options, but it seems that this is my situation:
For aplying for a permanent resident card (and citizenship after), I need at least one year of experience working in Canada. But it seems (I heard) I should not even bother applying for a work visa, because they dont give them to ++private++ schools students.
Another ways is to be accepted/wanted/required by a specific company, so they help with the work visa aplicattion. The problem here is that Im studying "Concept Art for Animation and Videogames", im an artist, new artists like me usually beging beeing freelance and later when they are well known they are contrated. I want to mention that every single international student of my school had to come back to their countries because they couldnt find a job (except the ones that got married of course).
So.. with all this.. Im arriving to the conclusion that I should be changing school to a public one if I wish to work and live in Canada, Am I correct?

Million thanks for helping us all

    Dear,

I applied for MBA at one of the Canadian Universities. I am planning to stay there and work after i finish my studies, is this possible?

    Thank you

  • michael

I have the same dream with you, please put me through from your experience.

  • Deana, carpentry and nurse are two professions well accepted (and also in demand) in Canada. I don't have enough experience to tell you, but I'd advise you contact a lawyer/immigration consultant with experience in visas to Canada. This person could help you and answer your question. In addition, if you did not find information on CIC's website, why don't you call them and ask the question? I am pretty sure they will give you some guidance in what to do about your situation.

Hello Gean. I am a married 31 year old mother of 4. My husband & I have discussed for several years now of how nice it would be to move our family to Canada. I have a step brother who has lived in Toronto for the past 3 years after discharching the US Navy & he recently married a Canadian citizen. He has told me that if we were serious that he & his wife may be able to sponsor my family but wasn't sure if my husband would be allowed since he has a felony from 1998 and did some jail time & was released in 2001 here in the States. That was quite embarassing info to share but oh well, we need to know. My husband is a trained carpenter/plumber & I am currently pursuing my college degree, I want to get into Nursing when I am finished. Can you please just let us know/suggest some options for us ( if any of this is even possible ). I have checked the CIS web site & quite frankly, I was confused. So, I would very much appreciate it if you could offer me any advice ( HOPE..:) ) Thank you very much for your time in reading this. Have a nice day God Bless you sir.

  • Muska: I wouldn't do this. Refugee status is not
granted if you're coming from the US.

Jolene: I am sorry but I don't know what to say.

Peaceful - eyes: You have the same rights as he has, no discrimination whatsoever. If he is sponsoring you, you'll get the documents to come to Canada. Once you're at the airport, you'll go and talk with the immigrant officials. They're the ones that will fill the forms and of course you have to inform your address to receive your permanent resident card. To receive your Canadian Citizenship will take a while. Please go to YMCA. When you're there talking with a counselor, ask all the questions you want.

Hello! I moved to Canada with my mother when I was 10 years old and she married a Canadian man who sponsored her and I both. I got married at the age of 10 to a Canadian guy and had a son here in Canada at the age of 20 years old. I am no longer married the the father. This September I plan to go visit in the Philippines for a few weeks and need to buy a new passport but I hear that you need Canadian citizenship but it will take one year and I need to go on my Vacation in September 2009 as my boyfriend is meeting me there. Is there a way to get a passport and get a document saying that I have lived n Canada since age 10 and now I am 34? Am I already Canadian citizen? I am legally working in Canada as well. I still have the same rights as a Canadian. I was born in te USA and came to Canada sprin 1985.

  • Muska

I checked the CIC; however, I do not have enough fund to show to embassy and be granted a student visa. I have applied for a loan but I am not sure if I secure it or not.
If I cross the border from US to Canada and apply for refugee/asylum, will I be permitted to start my PhD immediatly?
I heard that I won't be permitted to start my PhD till my asylum status is not clear (might take one year or so)
    Is that true?
Can I do so? I will REALLY REALLY appreciate your answer.

  • Kayode: I wish I could help you. Unfortunately, I can't do a lot. If you're having a hard time, I'd say you can try to study and then, look for opportunities abroad and even in your country. If you dream, you can do it. It is totally in your hands.

  • Muska: Yes, you can. You just need to check the requirements at the Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
Jolene: Maybe you can ask at the consulate of your country in your region? Even if you don't have a passport anymore, they can find out looking for your name, your parent's name or something like that? Have you checked this?

  • Jolene

I have been living in Canada since the age of 10 years old and now I am still living in Canada at the age of 34. I have married a Canadian man but now divorced. I am trying to work on getting my passport as my old one expired a long time ago and I no longer have my old passport. I have duel Citizenship where I can live in my birth country or in Canada but I was not born as a Canadian. Does this make me a Citizen of Canada? I need this info for my passport and need to know how I can prove my citizen as I do not have anything to prove except for my BC ID and my Social Insurance Card number. An answer as soon as possible will be helpful to my question. Thank you!

  • Muska

    Hi,
I am 32 years female. I have done medical school back home (a developing country) and I am about to get my degree in Master of Public Health in one of U.S. univerisities. I have applied for a PhD in Canada universities. I got an offer from one of the schools but they do not have full funding currently for me. I am supposed to pay for my tuitions and living expanses. They will offer me Research Assitantship but tht might not cover my whole tuition and living expenses. Because I am from a developing country I can not afford to pay all these expenses. I was wondering if you could let me know if I could apply for immigration once I come there and how soon I will be able to be granted immigration? That will help me to pay less tuition compare to international student fee.

  • Eddie, sorry but it is difficult to tell you what to do. Who said to you that you don't need job offer to get a work visa? Well, I could be wrong, but the only way that you have a work permit is that first you get a job offer in Canada.

  • Eddie

Gean Oliveira, Thanks a million for your reply, I have done my research on
other possibilities, Now I am facing another dillema and I hope you can help
    me out here.

I have narrowed my choices down to 2, but I cant decide which one to go for?

1- As I have mention before about the Immigration lawyers, the one that I am dealing with is offering a Fast Track Immigration Program at the cost of
$8500 CAD. According to this program They will find me an employer in Canada
and then will help me move there as soon as I have secured a job offer. Now the only problem with this program is that, they obviously dont give you any gaurentee, and the money is just too much $8500 CAD (I am sorry I am not discussing the finance here I am just discussing my choices)

2- The Holiday/Work Permit, is my 2nd option. This type of visa is easy to get
doesnt require a job offer, and is only valid for 12 months during this time I will be free to work for any employer in Canada. Application takes about 6-8 weeks.

Could you please help me to make a decision here, If I go for the option 2 Holiday/Work Permit, which is more like a temp work permit, then I am not sure if I will be able to get a job in time in Vancouver obviously job search takes time as well and I am in IT and I have no idea whats the current IT market is like? and also I can only avail this visa once in my life.

With option 1, it sounds more secure but the lawyer will take about $3500 CAD before they even start to look for a job for me, once they have got me
a job offer then they will take 2 more installments of $2500 CAD, however the
first part of the installment is not refundable, but 2nd and 3rd installments will only have to be paid once they have secured a job offer for me. It is a lot of money and I am not sure if its a scam where they take their money and leave me out to dry. I am sorry for the essay but I wanted to give as much detail as possible so you could give me a detailed answer as well. Also in your other article you mention that from sao paulo it take about 15 months for the immigration application to process, howcome it takes even longer from England? they say it takes about 34 - 48 months. Help !

  • Zaid: Looks like you do not qualify under the Skilled Worker process. If not, maybe the only way around that you have to immigrate to Canada is to look for a company that can sponsor you. Living in India makes things more difficult as you're not in Canada. Why don't you come and visit Canada and look for opportunities here? There's always hope!

Eddie: 1 - It is up to you. If you think that you're ok, if you've read the information available at CIC, you can do it yourself (that's what I did, too). Check my post about the application processing times in Canada.

2 - Yes, in order to apply for a work visa, you must have a job offer. If you don't have a job offer, you can't get a work visa in Canada.

3 - I've never heard of this kind of visa.

4 - Check the British Columbia Work futures for more information about Vancouver and of course, other cities in British Columbia

  • Eddie

Hi, I am so confused as to which Visa I should be going for? Please find the details below, I will appreciate your help Thanks.

I am a British Citizen, and a qualified software engineer with more than 5 years experience in IT. I have been thinking about moving to Canada since past year, and now I am ready to make my move. But I have no idea which route will work better for me.

1- I do qualify for federal skilled worker category and scored 78 marks. Now I am not sure whether I should go through an immigration lawyers or shall I just by myself? Would an immigration lawyer make a difference ? Also the processing time for the above category as stated on CIC is about 30 Months is that true? does it take that long for applicants applying from UK.

2- Can I apply for work Visa and then once I am in Canada, Can I then apply for Immigration/Permanent Residence? Also do I need to have a job offer before I apply for Work Visa or I can get it without the job offer?

3- I was also thinking about a Working Holiday Visa, is that something I can apply for? do I have to have a job before I apply for this category? and Can I change my status to permanent residence once I am in Canada on this Visa?

4- Finally, I want to move to Vancouver, But I have no idea how things work there, I have heard and read it is a very expensive place to live in some horrific news on the properties being so expensive and all that, I will be grateful if you could provide a basic information or a weblink where I could read more about Vancouver.

    Please Help !

  • zaid

hi everybody. I am 37 years old, an art director. Working in India, New Delhi. Married, and have 3 childrens. i have been dreaming of canada from my childhood days. I do not have any proper degree or such. my work experiance is about 8/9 years and have been working for all good brands and top most advertising agencies. I have some international awards as well. can someone please advice me how should i go for it and what should i do to get a visa and live there? please help. i dont want to let my dream die.

  • Gabrielle, the fact that your friends are willing to give you a job doesn't mean that they can get. They need to request the permission and then, if approved, they will receive a letter and you're the person responsible to attach this letter to your application. Doing that, yes, you can come with the work visa. However, it is not simple as this. Check the post: How can I hire a temporary foreign worker

What you can also do is to enroll in a course in a college or university in Canada. However, this course has to be at least 6 months. Of course in the meantime you can stay in Canada and renew your visa.

  • GABRIELLE

    Hi there,

Me and my boyfriend are from ireland and we want to go to Canada in a few months, we were thinking of applying for the 1yr Working Holiday Visa, but its working out at about €400.00 just to apply for the visa and then you have to book your flights through the same company and they absolutely rip you off because they can.
What we were thinking of doing and i dont know if its as easy as this was:
We know people in canada and if they were to offer us jobs would we be able to go over on a working visa instead, then we would get to stay in the country longer wouldn't we? We have done the online tests to see if we would qualify as skilled workers and we both pass the requirements.

Is it as simple as somenone offering us a job and then applying for the visa or are there certain conditions? it seems a bit to easy for this to be the case...

Also if we go over on a WH visa and we get offered a jobs while are there can we then apply for a working visa and stay in the country or would we have to come back to ireland and apply from there?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks a mil
    Gab :)

  • Namal, if you've received your visa as an investor, shouldn't you open a business in Canada? What kind of business do you have?

  • NAMAL

I AM 42 YEARS & A BUSINESSMAN IN SRI LANKA. I HAVE APPLIED FOR A CANADIAN VISA THRU THE INVESTER CATOGARY & GOT THROUGH. MY ENTIRE CAREER IS BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE & MY QUALIFICATION SKILLS DO NOT REFLECT THAT. NOW HOW WILL I FIND A SUITABLE POSITION BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE & WILL MY LACK OF QUALIFICATIONS AFFECT MY JOB PROSPECTS. I AM BASICALLY RELOCATING FOR THE PURPOUSE OF CHILDRENS EDUCATION.

  • Martie: Just time. You're young. Take this time to study, find a good job, get experience and then, inform yourself about Canada - I hope reading How to Live in Canada is helping you.

Lance: She needs to sponsor you if you want to live and work in Canada. What you can do is visit her in Canada, in case you'd like. As you're an American citizen, I'm pretty sure you don't need a visa to enter in Canada.

  • Lance Rodriguez

Hi my name is Lance i am a puerto rican US citizen..i just recently got engaged to the women of my dreams..the only problem is she lives in canada. now my question of concern is we live in two diffrent countries i was wondering if i would be able to move up there with her considering she has her own place on a reservation..and in the process while staying there would i be able to work on citizenship..and possibly find work i really have not much work exp in any fields but i am a hard worker and i pick up on most skills really fast..things just seem really hard at the moment but i hope this dream of us being together will be possible..can anyone help or any advice much appreciated..

  • Martie

    Thanks for answering.

What do you think we should do to increase our chances? We really really want this.

  • Marie: Yes, it is possible to finish your college in Canada. You need to decide where you want to live in Canada, then find the school that you'd like to study and apply for a student visa. All the steps you can find at http://www.studyincanada.com

Ross: What do you want to do in Canada? If it is to visit, I think you don't need a visa to come to Canada. If you're planning to work in Canada, you can come with a work visa (then you need to find a company what wants you) or with a skilled worker visa. All the information is available at http://www.cic.gc.ca (look for work permit visa and skilled worker visa).

  • Ross

hello.i am from England.iv visited canada so many times now with my antie & uncle living there & i
really want to try and work there for a year for the experience.iv looked at the
canadain websites and unsure what to go on.i wanna find a job when i get there
but looking at the few off the proggramms they say that i need a Documents relating to your trip such as an invitation from business of personal contacts in Canada, a letter from your employer, registration for a conference, your itinerary,to get a visa etc..do you have any idea what programme i need to related to.

  • marie

hello, i am from Africa but living in the US for 5yrs. i cam here as a tourist and went to high school and i am currently in a community college. my question is. is it possible for me to finish my school in canada. i have the proof that my parents can pay all the livings and tuitions. do i need to go back to my country and get the student visa or i can just get it here. i have been to the canadian immigration sites but i want further information.
    please help
    thank you

  • Chris: Yes, it is possible. However, the first thing that you should consider is how many points you have. In the meantime, remember that if you don't have enough points, you can continuous taking your nursing degree and at the end of the course chances are you will find a job in Canada. Please check the http://www.cic.gc.ca and look for the Skilled Worker and also the Student Visa.
Martie: That's a good question but I think this is not possible. First of all, if you want to immigrate to Canada you have to check your points and of course as you don't have any degree yet, any experience at all, it is almost impossible. However, that's something that you can consider in the future, too.

  • Martie

My friend and I are in the UK, and we are 16.

We want to move to Canada to study there. Our parents are fine about this, however they do not want to move.

Is it possible to immigrate at 16?

  • Chris

Hi, I am an international student here in Canada taking practical nursing. Is it possible to apply for immigrant status even though I haven't graduated yet. I was here in Canada for almost 2 years now. I almost finished with my second semester. In the Philippines, I finished university bachelor in Economics major in Finance and I have worked 8 months in the bank and another 8 months from a government financial institution as a Marketing Assistant and Account Ofiicer respectively. Please let me know on how can I become an immigrant as soon as possible?

  • Rose: I'm not an expert in immigration. However, I'd recommend you talk with the university/college that you're interested here. They're able to give you an answer better than I do. Check http://www.studyincanada.com for a list of places that you might consider once you immigrate to Canada.

Bruna: I understand your situation and your friend is going to be the http://www.cic.gc.ca website. There you will find a lot of information about the different options available if you plan to live in Canada.

  • Bruna

  • Paul: I'd say look for a job in your field and get your visa by your new employer.

    Michel:
1 - I'd rather not give you an answer than give you something that I don't know 100%. You
should check the Application processing times in Canada page.

2 - It takes less time than the skilled worker visa, as you already have a job offer. You
can check the wait times visiting the http://www.cic.gc.ca website.

3 - Yes, you can extend your visa in Canada. And yes, you can apply for a skilled worker visa if you're in Canada.

I'd advise you to check the Canadian Experience Class visa. Check my website and look for more information about this visa class.

  • Michael

    Hi,
I'm a 22 year old living in Ireland. I want to move to Canada soon and I realize that I will need either a skilled worker's visa or a work permit.
I have three questions I was hoping you could answer for me as I have tried to find the answers to these and no one can seem to help me.

    1) For the skilled worker's visa assesment calculation, one of the categories is work experience. I have not worked a year continuously in full tie work as I was a student until recently. Would an aggregate total of all my work count as a year's work experience?

    2) For the work permit, how long does it usually take to obtain a work permit after you apply (with a job offer)? I'm plannig on travelling to Vancouver in November to look for a job but I would like to be able to tell my potential employer how long they would have to wait before I could start working.

    3) I am currently on the wait list for a year work/travel visa to Canada. If I take this visa would I be able to extend my stay beyond a year if I was able to find work there?

Oh yeh, one last thing. Suppose I get a work permit or the travel/work one year visa, can I apply for an immigrant visa while I am in Canada currently using a different visa?

Thanks so much for your help

  • Carol, yes you can apply while you're studying. I am assuming that you will be living here with a valid student/tourist visa.

Devon, if you're living in the US, why don't you come to Canada and visit him? You can see by yourself what he's up to. Even before considering your move to Canada, I think it is a good idea just to spend some days and see what are your thoughts. In Canada we also have Wal-Mart. There's an agreement between Canada and the US, you just need to show your passport at the border to enter Canada/US. Just try to relax and organize your mind. After all, it could be only a passion, right?

  • Devon

Ok, I'm really completely lost, so any help would be grand, and I know I'm askign for a lot *blush*

I currently live in Tn - USA, I've meet someone that I've been talking to in a friendly way on line who lives in Ontario Canada, and I'm thinking of starting a relationship with him, but really I want to know what I'd be getting into if the relationship moved further to the point of living together...?wedding? And well I don't want to ask my "friend" simply because I just don't know if I could handle all the changes and don't want to get his hopes up.

I don't work and am raising a daughter on an inheritance. I don't really know what I should ask to be honest.

I guess the first thing would be about visa's or whatever they are called (yes I know I sound just about stupid, but I'm not even sure where my head is) Is there a site that can explain to me how I can get to live there without working or going to school?

Ok yes...this is going to sound really bad...but please remember I'm a American who has never even thought of stepping foot out of the US...How is shopping done there? *BLUSH* I mean here in the US we have wall-mart that supplies just about everything...I like the whole one stop shopping, it's easier with a kid. Do you have that or is it like you have to go one place to get fruit and vegies and a bakery to get bread, and a butcher for meat and another store for cloths? (feeling really dumb)

Can you visit the US whenever you want or do you need papers?

How does school work? My daughter is under 10 so she has a lot of school left to go through.

Is it a huge change from the US to Canada?

Um, I'm sure there are other questions I should ask, but can't think of them at the moment, I'm actually calling myself ten times a fool for even starting on this line of thought, but I know my "friend" would never live in the US, and I really like him...?love?

Any help you could give me would be great, and much appreciated. And if you think of anything else I should be thinking about just add it in, am welcoming of any info at all.

Hi, I'm Carol. My husband and I want to go to Canada to live and work. But we are a little lost about the best way to achive our dream. We're sending our résumés to different enterprises, if that doesn't work we're thinking about study something there. But our biggest question is, Can we apply for a permanent resident visa if we're living in Canada as a student or if we have a job there? I'm asking that because If you have a work permit, that gives you the opportunity to live in Canada as long as you have a job, but if you lose the job you have to leave the country.
If we enter Canada because we found a job there, can we apply to immigration process through Skilled workers and professionals if we are in Canada already???
OOhh, we are so confused, we don't know what the best way is, and we want to go there in 2009. Please, help us!!!!!!

  • Lorna: The first step is verify if you qualify to immigrate to Canada. I've explained before how you can do this, with the Skilled Worker Visa.
Iman: As far as I know, yes you can keep both citizenships. There are a lot of options, and as I said before you need to verify which one you're interested. The most common visa is the Skilled Worker Visa. However, you should check the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website as well.
Cyril: Yes, you can come to Canada. As a French citizen I think that you don't need a visa to come to Canada but you should check this information. Being a French citizen I think your destination will be the province of Quebec, as most people living there speaks French.

    Hi Anna

My family and I reside in Georgia, but I'm originally from Michigan. I've lived across from Windsor for the majority of my life and I now want to move my family there. My issues at hand are I am finishing my BA degree, and I will have my AA this June 08. I have plenty of work experience. My husband is in the university to, but he has a DUI from 2001. I'm concerned as I have no record and I want to move to Toronto. He hasn't been in any trouble since then and I need to know what it is we can do to live and work in Canada? Can you keep both citizenships(USA & Canadian) we are natural born citizens of the USA? Thank you for your Time.

    Iman

  • Lorna

I would like live and work in Canada with my family. How can I about doing so.

  • Oleg: The age of your family is not problem. If you're planning to immigrate to Canada as a skilled worker, you have to prove more money because of your kids/spouse. Other than that, no problems at all. Regarding the money you can check on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.
Val levi: Unfortunately, if you don't have education degree it is more difficult immigrate to Canada as a skilled worker. However, you can try to find a company who is willing to offer you a work visa. It is not impossible at all. Another thing that you could do is come to Canada as a tourist, visit some of the companies in your field and then, present yourself as a possible candidate. As I said, it is not impossible. I wish you and your family good luck.

well thank you very much you very help me.

  • Hi Anna, yes you can. However, in order to move and live in Canada you need a visa. If you are planning to visit Canada you need a visitor's visa. If you want to work and live in Canada you need a work visa, or a skilled work visa. All this information is available at the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.

I AM A FRENCH CITIZEN LIVING IN THE USA, I WOULD LIKE TO GO TO CANADA TO LIVE AND STUDY BUT I ONLY HAVE A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA.
    WHAT SHOULD I DO?

  • vadim.nekhaj

    Hi Miriam,
If I were you, I would get some experience in the place where you live and during this time keep constantly developing international skills, and skills that are valuable in Canada.

Recently I've looked over the jobs in Canada and its requirements and decided to archive the level they require here so that I would be a valuable specialist there.

  • vadim.nekhaj

    Gean,
I've got some tiny questions for you :)

How do you think is it real to find a job while being here?
May be you are in touch with someone who has such an experience?

  • Hi Miriam, you're right. The advice I could give you is have a job in your field and then get some experience as you need. If you do not have enough points, that's the way you will gain them. You still have a lot of time to prepare yourself to come and live in Canada. If it is possible, why not come to Canada and learn by yourself how things are here? :)

  • Miriam

    Hi !!!
I'm mexican and i have dreamed to travel to Canada since i was 17, now i'm 23yo but i still haven't had the oportunity. By now, i'm in halfway of my Master's degree but it seems that i still need a job to get some experience to try to work and live in Canada, at least that's what i think because i don't cover the total of points in the assessments.
I wish you could give me some tips to improve my oportunities.
And thanks for sharing your experiences.

  • Hi Annie,

I’d say as you’re in the United States right know is to look for a job while you’re there. A lot of companies have offices here. I’d check if there’s any opportunities for you in Canada. Here when you’re studying in a college or university (for example), you can also work for a company after completing the course. Normally it is one year contract with a company in your field. After that or even during the year you can apply as an immigrant, too.

Check http://www.cic.gc.ca and look for studying in Canada or work visa.

  • Annie M.

Hello everyone! I'm glad I found this place. I am Peruvian and right now I'm studying International Business in the US. My English is good and I am studying French. It's always been my dream to move to Canada, find a job and stay there after I get my diploma. I'll have to go back to Peru in 3 years and there's no much I can do over there. So I'm hoping to be able to move there even if I have no work experience. I really wish for this dream to come true and I hope I can have the opportunity to do it though I'm very scared of failing because I probably won't have any job experience. What can you recommend me?

  • Hi Olasupo,

What you can do is try to find a university to study. We have a lot of options here. I'd say you should go to http://www.studyincanada.com and start your research. From there you can specify the course, the region, city, university, etc.

  • OLASUPO

i want to come to canada and study, i've finished my national doploma here in nigeria and wish to come and continue my education there. i will be most glad if you can link to a certain university there.

  • Hi Cassandra, I know how you feel. Where are you right now? Maybe I can help you.

  • Cassandra Jennings
