Leader’s debate in Canada

by Gean Oliveira on October 8, 2008

Last week we had our leader’s debate in Canada. I had the opportunity to watch the debate and see what each candidate has to say. For the first time the candidate from the Green Party was also participating and it was nice to see a woman talking about politics with the other 4 male candidates.

I had said before that The National was having interviews with the candidates and as of today, Jack Layton and Elisabeth May have participated. The next candidate will be Stephane Dion. Let’s see if they will interview Stephen Harper and Gilles Duceppe until the election day.

We had the debate in two days. The first day was in French and the second day in English. As far as I could see, the main topic was related to the economic issues that we’re having in Canada. The candidates talked about the economic problems for at least 15 minutes. Other than that, the environment, Afghan mission, health and party’s platform were involved.

What differentiate Canada from other countries, as far as I know, is that as we have in Canada a lot of immigrants,  whatever the party says it could affect people living here (votes).

But back to the title of this post: the leader’s debate. Precisely the “behind the scenes”. There’s a program that I really like to watch every day. It is called The Agenda with Steve Paikin. I really like this guy. He was the moderator for the debate and I think he did pretty well – as usual. What I wanted to mention is what he has said on his blog about the debate: the days before, during and after the debate. He was able to take pictures that we normally don’t see. :) I’ve seen Steven at least 3 or 4 times. My company is close to the TVO’s head office at Yonge x Eglinton! However, I was shy to tell him I like his program as I’m saying now.. Maybe next time I will tell him personally!
