Laid off

by Gean Oliveira on July 28, 2008

I remember when it I was laid off 2 years ago. I was working in a Canadian company located in Mississauga and we started to hear rumors about another company from the US interested in our business. Months later, they acquired us. Different to some companies that I’ve worked before, we knew every step that was going to happen. Once the deal was signed, we had a meeting with everybody from the company, with our president telling us the news and answering our questions - specially from the laid offs that would probably happen.

With the new trends, it is more and more difficult to stay in your company for a long period of time. Take for example what’s happening with big companies all around the word. They’re cutting costs, they’re looking for ways to improve efficiency. When I left for my vacation, Ford announced they will close its plant. Now GM is planning to do the same. Air also thought about cutting more than 1,000 in . Today, Bell is also considering to cut 2,500 in .

Sometimes you have to be aggressive and change careers. Look for new opportunities, look for in with a big perspective in the future. Maybe you need to go to another province? You need to improve some skills, take courses? I think it is up to you! If you do not stay up to date with the technology, what’s going on with the market, listen to radio, watch television and be ready, you could be the next one. You decide your future, do not let your employer do this.

I’ve seen on TV a message from the govern of Ontario for people interested in a second career. I think other provinces also have a similar program. Do not forget to visit Job Futures Canada.
