I want to live in Canada. But how?

by Gean Oliveira on January 23, 2008

And the most important: why do you want to live in Canada? What about the chances in your country? Why did you decide that it is better leave your family, friends, job, stability and start again from the beginning?

Live in Canada is not for everyone. There are a lot of factors that should count to you before you decide to live in Canada. I’m not saying that you should not come, what I am saying is that sometimes – depending on your lifestyle – Canada is not the best option for you only because things are different here. But how different?

I know, it depends for each country and each person. In my case I had a good job, a good salary, I had paid my apartment already, I had a car, I had friends, but I didn’t see myself in the future doing the same thing over and over, and I did not see any chances for my future on the same company. Couldn’t I only change companies? Yes, I could but I wasn’t satisfied at all in doing this. I wanted a really big change.

It was comfortable there. But do you know when you’re looking for something but you can’t find it? That’s how I felt. Other factors were related to the politics, taxes, security, transport, crimes, etc. But the most important one: a complete different lifestyle.

I still miss my country, my family, my friends, the beach that I used to go, the weather, etc. It is a constant thing in my mind. However, on the other side I found Canada and I’m really proud of being Canadian. This is something that you can’t express, you only feel… and feel good. I couldn’t count how many times I doubt I did the right thing. However, time is your ally here and you should prepare yourself to the challenges that every immigrant find when they arrive in Canada.

  • Waseem: I am sorry to read your history but If you'd like to live and work in Canada, I'd advise you to visit http://www.cic.gc.ca and look for the different options that you have to live in Canada. There are a lot of different visas, such as Skilled Workers, Temporary workers, Refugees and so on.

Linda: Para que você possa vir para o Canadá com sua família, se és Portuguesa, imagino que não precises do visto para entrar no Canadá. Caso queiras trabalhar e morar aqui, precisará entrar com o processo de imigração através do site http://www.cic.gc.ca

  • Parwinder and Eric: There are different options that you can check in order to see if you qualify or not to live and work in Canada. The website that you should check is the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.

  • Vadim, I thought I spoke English. I had been studying English for more than 6 years back in my country. However, my teachers were not native speakers and of course during that time they did not speak as fast as I needed. Also, the lack of Canadian experience is another thing to consider when you immigrate to Canada. Doesn't matter how experienced you are if you have never worked before in a Canadian company. This is really important and you have to find ways to get the Canadian experience. How? Volunteering and Co-op courses.
  • Hi Gean,

    Good post!
What challenges did you come across when you had arrived in Canada?
