I’d like to share with you how I immigrated to Canada. The first thing that you need to realize is: Canada is looking for immigrants. Back in 2000 I finished my undergraduate degree and at the same time my English course. I had a good job in a private school in my city, but was not completely happy, as I was looking for more challenges to my career.
One day I was reading a Brazilian magazine (VOCE SA) and I saw one of the articles: Vagas para brasileiros no primeirĂssimo mundo. (something like job opportunities for Brazilians in Canada).
Anyway, the article cited that Canada is looking for immigrants and, if you have the prerequisites you can qualify and live in Canada. That’s all that I want. The opportunity to improve my English skills and also the possibility of be part of a new culture, meet new people, work in a new environment, travel to another country, study, and so on. Well, that was perfect! My eyes were bright with this idea.
I had this dream for myself until the day that I spoke with my wife about it. She said: ok, go ahead! However, she didn’t know that it will be possible for me: a person that never had been outside Brazil, without any friends living in Canada, without any information about Canada (even the cities, weather, culture, people).
Sometimes, I didn’t think this should be possible either. The only things that I had: English (good for Brazilian speakers, but almost nothing here - this will be a topic for a new post in the future), undergraduate degree, some money (I used to have a car, motorcycle, apartment, etc - but I knew that I had to sell everything before coming to Canada) and wish to study the application process, learn everything I could about Canada and spend a lot of time on the Internet.
That’s how I started my dream of living in Canada. More to come! Stay tuned.

Hi, I’m in the same exact position right now. Please tell me what else you did in the process of going to Canada. Have you found a job there? Thanks
Gean Oliveira 01.12.08 at 2:47 pm
Vadim: Thanks for your comment.
Lorraine: When I came I did not have a job. I found my first job after 4 months in Toronto. There are a lot of opportunities in Canada, but in the beginning you have to understand how things work here in order to find a job. You have to adapt yourself, understand that you’re only one more immigrant in Canada - as we receive lots of immigrants every day, and everybody looking for opportunities as well.

Congrats for the site. I am sure the immigrants-to-be will appreciate your efforts to help them.
Do emphasize that fluency is key to success. Without it, one cannot go very far.

Kleber: Thanks for your input and I agree with you.
Jose Mello: Every once in a while I see some job postings at the Brazilian consulates in Canada. I suspect right now they’re looking for people to work in the newest Brazilian consulate, located in Vancouver.
