Do not call list

by Gean Oliveira on September 30, 2008

Back in April I wrote a post about the Do not call list in Canada. I just want to let you know that as of today (September 30th, 2008) the service is available in Canada. By that means that you’re not going to receive calls from those companies selling you products or saying that you’ve received a free ticket to the Bahamas.

However, you maybe receive a call from a political party, a charitable organization or a pooling company. :)

Anyway, if you did not add your number to the list you can do so visiting the Do not call list Canada website. If you try to add your telephone number you can find delays on the service. For sure it is caused by website traffic:

[Update] It is up and running now.

  • TJL: This is what the Do not call list says:

What about calls from market research or polling firms?
Calls from organizations conducting market research, surveys, or public opinion polls are also exempt from the National Do Not Call List Rules and are not required to keep an internal do not call list. These types of calls are not telemarketing calls because the caller is not asking you to purchase, lease or rent products or services.

As you're receiving a call from another country, I think the only option that you have is try to figure it out the company they're using to and then, make a complain:

If my telemarketing complaint will not be processed due to an exemption, what additional recourse can I take to limit telemarketing calls?
If you have a complaint that is exempt under the National DNCL rules you are encouraged to put your number(s) on telemarketers internal do not call lists by contacting them directly.

I am on the list and have been for months, but I still get that Bahamas phone call once a day. How do I make it stop? The number is listed as 'unavailable'. I noticed the spiel says it is a public opinion poll. Does that mean they can call me as per the rules of the DNC list?

  • I have already registered my phone number yesterday. I hate telemarketing!
