Did you say thank you?

by Gean Oliveira on February 19, 2009

Today I want to talk about two simple words that makes me feel good, very good. I don’t know if you do this, but for every opportunity that I have, I always try to thank the person that I work with. Nowadays our lives are so busy that sometimes we forgot we also have a life outside our company right?

However, remember that we spend most of our time at the office – not at home. At least, that’s what happens to me and I feel very good at my company. Being an immigrant is always a challenge as we try to do our best every single day. I’m not saying that everyone else does not – what I am saying is that the atmosphere, the environment, the culture is different from our country of origin and then, as we’re gaining our space every day, we should be proud of our conquers and thanks the opportunity that we’re having.

I used to take the elevator at the office, but now I am taking the stairs. However, I remember that I always smiled and said good morning. Why not? It doesn’t cost me a dime and I feel good when I see the other person smiling too. Who doesn’t see this scene? You are at the elevator in the morning, but everybody is quiet, calm and they don’t say a word. Why not do different? Why not say good morning? It is a way to start our day – a good one, isn’t it?

I park my car at Future Shop, located at Yonge St, north of Eglinton St. It costs me $8 dollars/day to park my car there. When I am leaving, I usually give my ticket to someone else. Why not? Again, it doesn’t hurt me and I feel good doing this. If you do little things like this, you’re helping not only you, but people around you! Sometimes they’re surprised with my gesture and ask me if I want money back! My response: no, just do the same if possible – that’s how you pay me back – and I smile :)

To summarize, I have to say thank you one more time – for you, my reader, that is always here. Even if you don’t send me an e-mail or leave me a comment. Doesn’t matter. What it is really important for me is that I am sharing a little bit of what I know with you and if it is something useful, great. If not, the only way that I have to fix, to talk, is if you say something right? :)

I am very proud to see this positive attitude of a brazilian guy, first at all because it is an attitude of someone who not only wants to take advantage of everything, and also because smile costs nothing and works several muscles of the face, making person who practices the youngest!

    Now I see!
Very kind of you to "donate" your three-hour window! :-)

  • Valmir, sorry about that. Well, here in Canada I usually pay for parking during the day. For example, the place that I park my car, my ticket is valid from 8am until 7pm. That's why I pay $8 dollars/day. As I usually leave around 4pm, there's a 3h window that a person can use the same ticket :)

    Hi Gean

I'm very happy to read this post of yours. Only he or she who knows the good feelings that saying thank you brings will understand you. :-)

A doubt: I just didn't understand the part when you say you give your parking ticket to somebody else.

    Thanks for sharing this!
