Crime statistics in Canada

by Gean Oliveira on July 18, 2008

I’ve met a lot of people during the last 5 years. Most of them are immigrants living on the major cities in . I’d say the majority are living in Toronto. Talking to them and understanding their history, they decided to live in because of its security. And I completely agree with them.

Yesterday I was reading an article at the Statistics regarding the crime statistics in :

’s national crime rate, based on data reported by police, declined for the third consecutive year in 2007, continuing the downward trend in police-reported crime since the rate peaked in 1991.

The 7% drop in the national crime rate was driven mainly by decreases in counterfeiting and high-volume property offences such as theft $5,000 and under, break-ins and motor vehicle thefts.

Crimes in CanadaI was impressed with Ontario. As one of the biggest provinces in , Ontario is not the one with most crimes. The “winner” is Saskatchewan. And believe it or not, Saskatchewan has a 3.5% decline. Ontario is also ranked below the Canadian average - looking at the graphic, maybe the lowest one. Every once in a while, I hear that Toronto is not safe, is not secure anymore. If the population is feeling this (I am not), I can imagine what people in Saskatoon are saying.

To summarize, even with the results in , I feel completely safe. If you need more information, please visit the Statistics Canada website.
